What is the Instagram Notes Feature For Anyways?

Many of you have already seen the notes feature when you head to your inbox on Instagram, right?  For my fellow millennials, you are probably thinking “is this the new AIM away message?!”.  Don’t worry, ignore those horrid memories of dial-up and logging off when your dad needed to use the phone! This feature could be really beneficial for building a great community for your business!  

Notes are only visible for 24 hours, so like stories, and only to those who follow you and you follow in return.  They’re not meant to be something you want all of your customers to see, such as important updates.  So now you want to know what you should use those 60 characters for…

Below I’ve listed 10 ways that you can use the notes feature to increase your community engagement!

1- Share a daily challenge

This could be anything from sharing a photo of them using their product (which will then be great user-generated content!) or asking them to engage with a story or Reel you’ve created.

2- Share new content

You just posted a new Reel, go share about it in the notes!  Are you going live? Share the time in the notes!  You get it.

3- Share words of encouragement

Remind your customers that they’re amazing every day!  Share something inspirational and be a light in someone’s day.


4- Share a reminder

Do you have a sale coming up? Are you discontinuing a product?  Remind everyone who will see your notes!


5- Give hints to new products

This is pretty self-explanatory, but cover all of your bases when launching something new!

6- Ask for feedback

Have you started offering a new service, or are you contemplating adding something new to your roster?  Ask your audience what they think or what they would like to see.

7- Ask for recommendations

Connect with your customers by asking for their recommendations.  This could be for anything–books, skincare, kid’s items, etc!  The sky is the limit, but this is a great way for them to feel more connected to you!

Want to make your loyal customers feel appreciated?  Share a “secret” sale via notes.  Add the code and let them know the sale is limited and for only those that see the note!


9- Share affirmations

Share a daily affirmation or words of wisdom to get their day started off on the right foot.
